This is a majestic historical pendant of the late 19th century features a mother of pearl carving depicting the Virgin Mary. A stunning sterling and 18ct gold jewel comprised of the finest French craftspersonship, this pendant is a standout among 19th century virgin medallions. I’ve seldom seen so elaborate a religious jewel, but to find a mother or pearl carved virgin set with so dazzling an array of diamonds is truly a confection for the iconographic collector. Dripping with the contested opulence of Catholic allegory, this pendant features no less than 57 diamonds (two old mine cut, five old european, one outstanding antique pear cut of over .30ctw, and the remaining ones being rosecuts), the pendant is in immaculate condition for its age, even maintaining the original diamond set bale, which all too frequently is replaced during the long life of such precious family heirlooms. The Virgin mother is depicted drawing back her veil to reveal her sacred flaming heart, carved in painstaking detail with a crown of thorns and a lily, her sacred symbol, clutched in her right hand. We are very excited to offer this superb jewel with such special historical detail.
