A special Georgian double sided seal ring in carnelian with a 9ct shank, this immaculate ring is a rare example of a functional signet from the early 19th century. The carnelian is an alluring dark tangerine tone, incised with the names Sydney and Sophia, perhaps a special treasure shared lovingly between sisters. The ring’s provenance is made all the more alluring by the realization that “Sydney” is written out in forward form (which would appear backward if impressed upon hot wax), while “Sophia” is incised in reverse (to be legible when stamped in hot wax). An intriguing jewel with so much history, this special treasure is sure to be a well loved addition to any collection focused on 19th century jewels rich in provenance.
