Watch chains are one of the true artifacts of the Victorian jewelry wardrobe. While their functionality was perhaps left by the wayside in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the unperturbed examples that have survived remind us of a time when opulence was without gender and formal appearance of the utmost importance. This exceptional late Victorian Cuban watch chain is one of the most luxuriant items we’ve brought into the Curio this year, weighing in with a whopping 52 grams of pink 9ct gold. No detail was spared in the creation of this beautiful chain, meant to drape heavily across a gentleman’s vest. Painstakingly hallmarked on every individual link of hardware, the snaking quality of this treasure renders it not only a joy to hold, but a sensual experience to sport either as a necklace or a double wrapped bracelet. In perfect original condition, it may perhaps even be used today for its original purpose by the discerning new owner. One of the best we’ve ever had.
