A gorgeous hand-carved striking portrait in fossilized organic bone, this special carving is a rare portrait of a rare Napoleon circa 1800, perhaps just before he became emperor of France. This piece was welcomed lovingly into my collection, as I had a predilection for cameos, especially those carved in peculiar mediums. The fossilized bone seen here possesses a crystalline quality, best shown on the reverse of the cameo. I was intrigued first by the color, but then the dramatic rendering of Napoleon: his nose here shown with its signature bump and his chin nearly too plump for his face, there is an element of caricature to the portrait that beguiled me. I am excited to see where he will journey next.
