An impressive multicolored medical staff, also known as a Cadeuceus, from the craft circle of Carlo Guiliano. Possibly even by Guiliano’s hand during his employ with Robert Phillips, Harry Emanuel, Hunt & Roskell, or Hancocks & Co. This superb cadeuceus features five colors of enamel, including a vibrant red, light blue, and cream. My personal favorite is the light pink scalped section beginning the wings because the guilloche style of enameling is best seen within that color. The delicate scales of the twisted snakes are created with a skillfully rendered crosshatch done in black enamel on gold, with the entire composition capped by two brilliant pearls. Very in keeping with the color palate of renaissance revival enamel jewelry that was en-vogue in London in the 1870’s.
