Micromosaics from the 1860’s are increasingly elusive, becoming harder to find everyday. This true Grand-Tour example is incredibly rare, with fully intact tesserae, it is an anomaly in the 21st century. The Grand Tour was a traditional trip taken by upper class young men and women, with the goal of exposing them to the artistic riches of France and Italy, thereby completing their education. These tours were wildly popular, reaching their peak in the late 19th century, as part of this tradition, travelers would collect artwork and souvenirs as mementos of their travels. Jewelry, particularly micro mosaic, was one of the most popular of souvenirs from Italy. The intricate mosaic jewels, typically necklaces with matching bracelets, earrings and a brooch or pin, handset by the finest Roman craftsmen, captured the beautiful scenery of the Italian countryside and commonly depicted ruins or monuments in Rome.

This Spinner, likely made in Italy as a grand tour souvenir, features the Caius Cestius Pyramid on one side, with the Roman Forum ruins on the reverse. This particular example fascinates as it spins, with mesmerizing archaeological revival scalloped edges, applied boules, flowers, and ornamental notches. It is a standout example of mocromosaic and a delightful ode to the ancient arts.
