One of the most incredible personal collections pieces I've ever hoarded, this bracelet intersects two of my acquisition focuses; the use of gold to recreate textile arts, and Napoleon III period jewelry. The Napoleon III era (or Second Empire, 1852-1870) was a period of artistic and technological innovation for France, greatly influenced by the Trompe l'Oiel artistic phenomenon of "tricking the eye" into believing it was seeing something it was not. Jewelry was perhaps the premiere decorative art to engage with the fashion of eye tricking. This bracelet attempts to render the scalloped cuff of a dress, "embroidered" (read, enameled) with flowers to complete the ensemble. However, rather than a soft silk or velvet, the bracelet manages this finish in 18ct gold. The magic of the bracelet is further underscored by the 9 part construction that moves in a scale like curve around the wrist. I've worn it only a handful of times, and will be bereft to let her go.

 Make sure you find the secret in the enameling as well...  if you look closely enough, you'll find that not all of the roses are uniform- there is a white surprise awaiting the keen eye.
