Quite untouched by time, this outstanding Lapis cameo bracelet with diamond laurels is one of the finest cameo bracelet's we've ever had the pleasure of offering. Truly remarkable, this bracelet speaks to both the Etruscan revival work that was extremely popular in the late 1860's, with new archaeological exhibitions on view at the Louvre, and the Roman Revival that spoke deeply to the aesthetic of III empire jewelry.
Napoleon the III was known for his love of the arts, and keeping trend-setting women at his side; while he utilized the Napoleonic tradition of Romanesque revival, jewelry, particularly in the later 1/2 of his reign, during and after his affair with the Countess di Castigliogne, a new found neo-oppulance was all the rage in Paris. This bracelet speaks perfectly to this new aesthetic, with a cameo portrait in Lapis, it is exactly the type of fine jewel we expect to see on the wrist of a well to do patroness of the arts in her portrait. I cannot imagine a more perfect example of this period. I've included some images for reference from Guido Gregorietti's Jewelry Through the Ages, as well as an image of Virginia Oldoini in the image apendix.
