Una donna veramente bellissima; This beautiful young woman in pastoral mid 1830’s Italian dress, is finely depicted in a scrolling 18ct frame, with a bright yellow canary perched on her hand. Likely Swiss in origin due to the scrolling gold work, this stellar brooch captures the pastoral fashions of the beloved “romantic” period that was prolifically painted and depicted throughout the second quarter of the 19th century in Italy.
The enamel portrait bears significant resemblance to the work of German painter Franx Xaver Winterhalter’s 1833-36 Italian Period, spurred by his educational trip to Italy which seamlessly nestled his work in conversation with Grand Tour souvenir work. The cultural climate of the 19th century saw Italy serving the European world as the seat of pure artistic vision for both Archaeological scholarship and the pleasantry of living. An outstanding find.
