The tale of Daniel in the Den of Lions is one I had not yet seen depicted on porcelain in miniature form before coming into contact with this exceptional brooch; especially in its original composition as this example appears to be. Set in a magnificent 18k frame 5 millimeters wide and encircled by a greek key pattern, this piece is bound to dazzle all who meet it.

The story of Daniel and the Lions (Book of Daniel, 6:22) is found in the old testament beginning with King Darius of Jerusalem, who, after much thought, enacted a law prohibiting prayers facing towards the city. Despite this, Daniel continued his thrice-daily prayers towards Jerusalem. Frustrated and eager to see Daniel gone from the court, his fellow ministers concocted a devious scheme to dispel him.

The envious ministers approached King Darius, lodging a formal complaint against Daniel for flouting the new law. The king was greatly distressed, as Daniel was one of his trusted presidents, and the last thing he wanted was to punish him for pious defiance. Darius attempted to quell the ire of his courtiers, but his ministers were relentless. With a heavy heart, the king cast Daniel into a cave den of ravenous lions, and the mouth, sealed with a large stone. King Darius, worried sick for Daniel, found himself unable to sleep that night.

Daniel was spared by the lions, for God had sent an angel who appeared in the den and protected him by placing shucks over their mouths. The next morning, the king got up and hurried to the den. He called out for Daniel, and to his utter amazement, he could hear Daniel’s voice coming from cave instead of a lions roar. Daniel explained to the King that he had been spared by the lions, for God had sent an angel who appeared in the den and protected him by placing shucks over the animals’ mouths. This piece, showcasing a triumphant story illustrating the power of prayer and staying steadfast in your core beliefs, is an excellent rendering in paint on porcelain and one of the best miniatures we’ve ever had. If scaled up, I could easily imagine it on the walls of the Frick, especially due to the glistening ornate frame.
