This utterly unbelievable hardstone cameo brooch features a Trojan soldier with a moustache in white enamel. This piece indicates to us that he was likely made as a portrait of a Victorian gentleman in the 1860’s, rendered as a soldier or even possibly Ares, the god of war. We see this quite frequently with feminine cameos as well, often of noblewomen depicted as goddesses. Not only is this example in hardstone, which was much more difficult to carve and highly sought after, it also has a white enamel halo, which is extraordinarily elusive.
